Charles Kingsford Smith was born on 9th February 1897 in Hamilton (a suburb within Brisbane), Australia. He was educated at the University of Sydney, and then at Trinity College, Oxford.

At college, he studied modern languages and literature but soon found his true vocation as a pilot. After graduating in 1921, he obtained a position with Imperial Airways as a commercial pilot flying between London and Johannesburg.

In 1926, Kingsford Smith joined the Royal Flying Corps as an instructor pilot at Netheravon. Two years later he was transferred to General List and given command of No. 18 Squadron RAF Fighter Squadron which was equipped with Hawker Hawks. He gained his first victory in this aircraft over France during the German invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939; during this time, he married Muriel Cutts.

In 1940 Kingsford Smith took command of No. 70 Squadron RAF when it was formed in Egypt from two other squadrons that were already there for service with the Desert Air Force (DAF). Under his leadership, the DAF achieved remarkable success against Rommel's Afrika Korps but ultimately failed to stop them from reaching El Alamein until 1942 when British forces finally broke through their lines after several months of fighting.
